I found that many of my financial successes involved buying low and selling high. I learned how to do this by reading some books. You're pretty much an idiot if you follow miscellaneous advice on a forum without understanding why you're doing it.

Just stick with index funds, without knowing much about your finance its hard to say. Index funds give you more diversification, but I would consider investing only if you have a strong financial foundation.

Do you have 3-6 month emergency fund?
Any consumer debt or student loan?
Do you have a 401k?

Give us some more details so we can help you out.

For many the best investment they can make now is to pay off bad debt. Especially debt that is greater than 10% interest.

I also agree with you, because you are paying a lot for interest.
