I forgot to mention an important thing with regard to the matching. The company matches 50% of what I put in up to 4%. So to get the biggest match I have to put in 8%. So I'm already there. I don't think that's right - have you checked your company matches? For me, my company matches 25% for every ...

It's my understanding that they won't let you use a smartphone without a data plan even though you own it outright. This is based on a few friends experiences. You also can't use a Verizon iPhone on att even though they have the exact same hardware. Telecom companies make it as difficult as possible...

One thing about the iPhone is that I think ATT will require you to have a data plan. They won't let you use and iPhone with a basic talk plan. You could try tmobile if you are no longer under contract. They have much cheaper plans than ATT. Just a thought.

Why would there be a 10% penalty for the lump sum? I though you would have to pay taxes on it. It's not a 401k but a pension. I have a good idea what company the OP is talking about. I know there is a chance any company could go under but I would rate the risk as low for this company if my guess is ...

Thanks for sharing your experiences alohabear. I'm still a little shocked that stuff like that still goes on. Guess it shouldn't be that surprising, many people resist change even if its for the better.

I'll add my experience. I know of 4 couples (myself included) that started at my company around the same time (early 2000s). I work at a large aerospace company with many engineers and scientist. Not sure if that makes a difference or not. The husband and wife for each couple started around the same...

Maybe we should start a thread on salary gap. I'd be interested to hear peoples experiences.

I would take $6k and pay off that credit card. The other debts have low interest and I agree with doinghomework. I have a student loan at 2.25% and I just pay the minimum. I'd rather put extra into my retirement than pay it off early.

Congrats! That's awesome. And thanks for the advice from your friend. It took me around 8 years to get to the $100k mark and it felt difficult. I really hope it gets easier and quicker to the next $100k.

One of the big potential issues is kids and family. Are you married? Do you have kids? Because the picture changes a lot. What if you the house you buy is not in a school district you hate? What if your future wife doesn't like the location? I'm not say not to buy a house if you are not married or h...

I agree that FWD will be fine in most weather situations and perfectly fine for pavement. I don't think you need a 4WD just because you live in a state that has a lot of snow. Now if you wanted to go off roading or activities like that I would be more inclined to get a 4WD and one with as much groun...

I generally like Subaru's and if you like it I think you should get that. The 4WD might cost you a bit more in purchase price and a few MPG but if it makes you feel safer then it is probably worth it. Most newer cars these days are very reliable compared to the cars 20 or even 10 years ago. I expect...

I don't think the credit card companies are providing that info out of the kindness of their hearts. I believe it's law that they provide that. But it's good that they provide that info.

I don't have cable TV but I still have cable internet. I really like it and its about $65 per month for 25 Mb which is fairly fast. Don't know if you live in a city but that might make a difference.
