Keeping track of the highest Savings Account & Money Market Account rates at banks by yourself is nearly impossible. I know because I tried it for a long while with my list of the High-Interest Savings Accounts & High-Yield Money Market Accounts. But in the end it simply took too much time and I could never stay on top of the constant rate changes. The information below is collected every day from over 200 banks, and the top 50 earning savings & money market rates are displayed, making the job of finding the highest rates much easier. I thought this tool was great so now I've replaced my hand-updated list with this table.
Right now savings & money market rates are within close range of CD rates, and companies like Everbank are offering bonus introductory rates even higher than many CD rates - without locking you in for the term of the CD. As of December 3, 2009 the Everbank introductory rate is 2.51%.

High-interest savings accounts and money market accounts are excellent tools for managing your money. They allow you to save for goals — both short-term and long. When shopping for the best bank, it’s important to look for high interest rates, but it’s also important to double-check that the bank is FDIC insured. You can use the EDIE calculator to check on which types of accounts at which banks and for which amounts are FDIC insured. Do your homework and choose an online savings account that works for you.
Have you been able to find savings or money market account rates that are even better than the ones listed here? If so, please let us know. Don’t forget to include all the details: name of the bank, state, rate, when you opened this account with this rate and whether one can you open an account online or have to come in person. I’d like to find the best possible savings account rates and money market rates to share with Get Rich Slowly readers.

Note: Everbank charges a $9/month fee for balances under $5,000.
What about high interest checking accounts? How can some banks offer over 4% interest on amounts up to $50,000 and should I be concerned about using them? The one in particular I have an account with is FDIC insured.
Has anyone done business with smartypig?
If so, what has been your experience?
Thanks.
I have used Smartypig recently. I am not happy with duration between removing the amount from my checking account to the time it is available to earn interest in Smartypig account. I also had some trouble with the initial setup and had to mail in paperwork to activate an account. Also if you just want to take advantage of their interest rates and not setup a savings goal it is not possible.
I’ve been with SmartyPig for several months now. Opening an account was straightforward and I had no problems with setting it up. I agree with Darrin about the long wait from crediting transfers to my SP account (it takes 3 days), but that has more to do with banking laws. Seeing the progress I’m making in my savings goal is very motivating especially when you don’t need the money for many months. The best way to view a SmartyPig account is as a certificate of deposit without the early withdrawal penalty. A savings account elsewhere is more liquid, but doesn’t give you a very good interest rate.
Has anyone had any experience with AmeX High-Yield Savings? I want to begin an account but I was just trying to get some info. Thanks.
Just opened an account with Shorebank Direct, seems to be the highest interest rate with low minimum, etc. Anyone have any experience with SBD?
I was wondering how often these high interest online savings accounts vary their interest rates? Are these very high rates just teaser rates?
I’ve had online accounts with Shorebank Direct since Nov. Took a bit to clear the glitches (transfer limits were more complicated than I saw at first, can’t have >2 accounts connected, money seems to be nowhere for 1-2 days before it arrives). Have been highly satisfied since. Interest rate did drop a few times, recently rose–each time they emailed me a notice. Besides the financial benefits, I love that they do good in communities I care about.
Initial review of Shorebank Direct was “This is a complete pain and not worth it.” The phone support is absolutely miserable, but their customer service available through email is competant and helpful. Guess who I talked to first?
User interface (what you see on the screen/ navigate through to do this or that) is pretty disgusting compared to what I am used to with my old ING account and bank accounts on line.
But, it pays better than the rest at my level and that is why I am there; for now.
Bauer Financial (http://www.bauerfinancial.com/btc_ratings.asp) gives ShoreBank a rating of ZERO which is right below their ONE STAR RATING (TROUBLED) so it may only be a matter of time before federal regulators seize this bank just like they just did with Corus Bank?

To Gayle: 4.01% APY is what I’m getting on checking. It is FDIC so you should not fret on loosing your money
I’m wondering what bank Gayle has her 4.01% APY checking account with and what the accounts requirements are (minimum deposit, debit transactions/month etc.)?
Thanks
Frances
I’ve opened an account at American Express, good rate, but they are bozos. They are clueless about how to run a bank. For example, they insist on sending each statement addressed not just to me, but addressed to each beneficiary listed on the account. For another example, to set up a telephone access PIN, they made me create my own challenge question and answer, and then USPS mail them both the question and the answer. That took more than 6 weeks to get registered in their system. For another example, the form to set the beneficiary did not have room for cascading beneficiaries (wife first, then kids) or for proportions (50% to the youngest, 25% to the other two).
Please tell me about Ing Direct -
Does anyone have a preference to ING Direct online savings vs. ALLY online savings?? Are they both reputible? My son has $500.00. Would this be the best bet for the money?
ing pays 1.29 ally 1.55 is it safe to transfer money to ally
I’ve had Ally/GMAC for several years. No problems, competitive rates..
I just opened a checking account with a local bank that pays 4.98% and compounds monthly, account balance has to be $100.00. It is a variable rate but has remained constant for the last 11 months.
Gayle, there’s a useful article here about high interest checking accounts
My credit union has been giving me a competitive 2% on my savings for some time now with no maximum balance. In order for them not to get flooded with new customers and therefore lower rates, I will not be divulging their name. Sorry.
I’ve been using kasasa which gets me about 4%. It has no costs, but the catch is you have to have 10 debit transactions and 1 electronic deposit/withdrawal each month and electronic statements in order to get the high yield. I’ve been happy with it. It’s a program through various banks, so you don’t need a bank that’s nearby. Oh, and FDIC insured
I had dollar savings for awhile, but then that tanked down to about 2%.
Capital One’s InterestPlus Online Savings requires $2500 or more to earn interest.
I have been a fan of Ing Direct, and Emigrant direct banks….service is fast and they are reputable. I have been with Ing for 5 years now and Emigrant for 3-1/2 years. I schedule my deposit ahead of time and the rate is comparable, no min. deposit and the w/site is simple and not tricky. I can also download real time transactions in my Quicken… I also tried HSBC in which the first online bank that sent me a debit card…so it was helpful when I needed Emer. $. Ing also offers checking account with a debit card/credit which gives you a set overdraft amount. Banking at Ing makes banking online hassle free.
I have been with ING for 5 years now. Unfortunately the interest rate has dropped from my initial rate of over 5% APY to 1.25%. I haven’t had any problems with them at all. Easy setup online, had to mail them a check as the initial deposit. It is really easy to have linked or shared accounts with different owners(and to unlink if needed). Also your 1099 is available online. Transfers do take a couple of days but they also have direct deposit and their own mortgage and checking accounts. Free $ for referals for both parties.
I would like to know why HSBC Direct never makes any of these bank rating polls? I mean I feel honored that they are like my hidden gem, but seriously, they’re a pretty big bank. Their motto “The World’s Local Bank”.
I’ve been with HSBCdirect for a number of years and they have consistently offered some of the highest rates. For example, right now their Online Savings Account is 1.35% only surpassed by Ally (who we all know is the failed GMAC bank). Plus there is no min…well if there is it’s $1. Their Online Payment Account (their checking with debit card) offers 0.85% yield.
So really, why does HSBC Direct never make the cut on anyone’s lists?
Does anyone know of a good online savings bank that will allow downloaded transactions into QuickBooks? Seriously. I haven’t found one yet.
Has anyone tried using GE Interest Plus? It’s not FDIC insured but it works just like a bank account and their rate is currently 1.75%.
I was about to try GE until I read that it wasn’t insured. My 2% savings account is better. No rate tiers, it is insured to $250,000, and has a history of competitively high rates. I suggest you keep looking for better deals.
I have $4100 an iwant to open a high interest saving account but i dont really now what bank to use ani kind of dont understand how all this works kind anyone help
State Farm bank has a 1.45% saving account. That is one of the highest I’ve seen.
I wonder, if nobody ever tried international online money markt acounts. I think that banks in kuwait, qatar, monaco or macao could have interesting high yields.
Has anyone tried Everbank? Since they are offering bonus introductory rates even higher than many CD rates - without locking you in for the term of the CD. As of December 3, 2009 the Everbank introductory rate is 2.51%.
how does rhonda get 4.98%- why are some people saying th ehighest is 1.45%- 2% whats up??? I need to put several k, somewhere safe, soon. thanks
i see capitol one as highest (above text on THIS page) 1.44%- is there something better? thanks all
Henry, I agree with you, they are bozos. It took AMEX five days to credit the account (that is three days after debiting my bank account. This a late response as I just found out that Amex switch the original APY offer 1.5 to 1.3 (I opened the account on January 9, 2010). When I called to ask for an explanation, the customer service told me that the change took place because that is what other banks were paying. The answer should have been: the government requires that if we are using TARP money(transitional Assistance Recovery….) the bank cannot pay an apy higher than banks that did not receive TARP money. I’m searching for a bank that pays an APY of 105 or higher. I found but it requires that I deposit $25.00 monthly in person. Amex played a dirty trick and I do not appreciate it. As soon as I find a bank that will keep their word, I will transfer my money.
